waitrose - charity of the month programme
If you have been shopping at Waitrose, Guildford recently, you may have seen that the George Abbot PTA, as a registered charity, has taken part in their customer token scheme supporting the Specialist Centre for the Visually Impaired at the school. Waitrose has shared £1,000 between the charities at the end of the month, and the School was delighted to receive £370. Thank you to all those who supported the programme.
The Clandon Park Run 2017 has successfully taken place. Over 300 runners took part in the 10K or 4K runs, the 10K run taking in beautiful parts of the Clandon Park estate, including the lake, usually closed to the public.
Many thanks to:
• The individuals and companies who sponsored the run
• If you donated money to cover the costs of putting on the run
• The members of the PTA who helped with the organisation of the run
• The helpers who gave their time on the day, either around the school and marshalling on the course
• Andy Colebrook who used the laser cutter to produce the medals
• The Earl of Onslow for allowing us to run through Clandon Park
• Our fabulous runners!
A special mention to Moira and Kat from Kelly’s Storage Charity Events who kindly provided the infrastructure to allow the run to take place. The expertise and experience they brought to the run was invaluable.
There is still time to make a donation to the Clandon Park Run 2017. All the money raised is going towards funding a new IT Suite. A £20 donation from all of the families at George Abbot would raise £20,000, currently funds raised stands at: £12,386.
Rotary Club Schools’ Concert
On Thursday 16 March, the Music Department took just over 80 students, along with two other schools, to perform in a charity concert for the Rotary Club of Guildford at GLive. The programme featured a wide range of musical acts from students across all year groups.
The evening kicked off with a couple of popular numbers from the recent school production of We Will Rock You, followed by a beautiful guitar solo from GCSE music student Song. Next up, the George Abbot Male Chorus entertained the audience with She Said by Plan B featuring dancers with choreography by Ms Haste.
The Chamber Choir then performed a fantastic and tricky arrangement of Our Love Is Here To Stay by Gershwin, followed by a violin and cello duet from A-Level music students Ella and Harriet. The Only Louder choir demonstrated some great choreography skills with their version of Superstition. The concert finished with the George Abbot Big Band performing Copacabana and Big Spender, featuring Ellie.
The students were fantastic throughout the entire day and rehearsals leading up to the show. The Music Department is very proud of all of them.
ski trip to sestriere
Lots of sun, even more snow and a ton of smiles, it must be the George Abbot Ski Trip! Forty pupils from across all ages enjoyed an incredible week of skiing and snowboarding.
The long coach ride didn't even come close to dampening the spirits of the young snow sport enthusiasts as they arrived to a snow covered resort. Six days of near perfect conditions awaited for them to perfect their skiing and boarding techniques. After five hours on the slopes the evenings were filled with quiz nights, movie nights and ice skating to name but a few of the activities on offer.
A huge thank you to the staff and everyone involved: 321Ski - the tour operator - Tom, our incredible 321Ski Rep, the Sestriere ski instructors and last but by no means least, the students themselves.
101 students from the Dance Department recently competed at the annual Rock Challenge dance competition at The Hawth Theatre in Crawley. This was the first time we had competed at this venue against schools with a history of success. Our team gave an outstanding performance. We were very proud to achieve SECOND PLACE, plus six awards of excellence in Choreography, Performance Skills, Entertainment, Video Performance, Stage Use, and Lighting. Photos to follow.
Our annual Christmas Concerts took place on the 5th and 6th December and were of an extremely high quality over both nights, with some stunning solo and group performances. Well done to everyone involved!
English School's Swimming National Finals
After qualifying for the ‘Finals Day’, the Under 13 and the Under 15 Boys Medley Relay squads had the opportunity to compete at the London Aquatics Centre which is the pool used in the London 2012 Olympics.
The competition itself included the top 30 fastest swimming teams from schools across England. George Abbot qualified in 13th and 18th respectively. The calibre of schools competing was incredible. George Abbot is very proud to announce that both teams finished top of all the state schools in the competition; a fantastic achievement. Huge congratulations to the teams.
engineering & eco students
An amazing story of adventure and inspiration landed on our doorstep in the form of a solar powered Tuk-Tuk to motivate the George Abbot Engineering students and Eco-team.
Engineer Naveen Rabelli, aged 35, set off from Hyderabad, India in February 2016 on a seven month journey that finished at Buckingham Palace after completing a 6,200 mile overland adventure. Naveen had the dream of making this journey from age 8, and it has at last become a reality. His passion and desire to undertake the expedition in an environmentally friendly way, as well as to prove that solar energy transportation can work was wonderful and truly impelling.

dementia friends - april 2016
Year 11 students and the Key stage 4 PSE staff all recently became Dermentia Friends.
A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action - anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend. Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help. From telling friends about Dementia Friends to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts.
Students are wearing their badges with pride and now certainly are more aware of the community that surrounds them.
music department concert
Back in March, the George Abbot Music Department took 75 students to performance in a concert at GLive in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Guildford and three other schools.
The ticket sales helped raise money not only for the Rotary Club, but also for the Department. The programme was varied including everything from Bruckner's Locus Iste, sung beautifully by the Chamber Choir, to Sing Sing Sing by Louis Prima performed very energetically by the George Abbot Big Band!
Well done to all the musicians and dancers involved, they were fantastic!

George Abbot was lucky enough to have a band called 'Sour Kix' who are WWF ambassadors, they performed as part of the conference to help celebrate Earth Hour. They appeared on TFI Friday last November. A hugely successful event
interview day - march 2016
George Abbot’s annual Year 10 Interview Day was held on Friday 4 March. The event is the culmination of a lot of hard work from the students and the PSE team of teachers. Students were all taught about the various aspects of applying for jobs, filling in application forms on-line and putting together a CV. Once that was complete they moved onto interview technique.
This year the event was sponsored by Qubix, leaders in business analytics and to whom George Abbot School is extremely grateful to for their generosity which allowed the event to go ahead.
We would also like to thank the 39 local employers, parents and school governors who turned out to give these young people a taste of ‘real life’, what it is like to be interviewed for a job by a total stranger. Firm hand shakes, eye-to-eye contact and clear speech were the order of the day.

bbc good food show
In November forty students from Years 9,10,11,12 & 13 went on the BBC Good Food Show trip at the Birmingham NEC. This trip gave the students a wonderful opportunity to see and taste new and different foods from around the world. Many of students had books signed by TV celebrity chefs. Throughout the day students could stop and watch demonstrations and learn about different cooking methods and equipment. The afternoon brought excitement as we had front row seats to watch Paul Hollywood make a spiced plum pizza and stilton bread. The students on this trip were a credit to the school and their families as their behaviour was exceptional.
