At George Abbot we believe that homework has an important part to play in helping students progress. Studies suggest that homework can add between two and eight months progress to a student’s learning (Education Endowment Foundation) .
Homework is set for students in each year group. We expect the volume to increase as they move through the school.
Teachers will choose when it is most beneficial to learning to set any homework in the week. Research shows that this allows homework to have greater impact on learning. Where ever possible teachers will try to give students 5-7 days to complete tasks. However there will be times when this is not always possible or appropriate and shorter timescales for completion may be set.
Students can access the gallery and USIC to make use of the facilities available. These venues are supervised. Hours as follows: Gallery is open from 8.00am – 8:30am, break time and lunch time. USIC is open 8.00am – 5.00pm with homework club for all students based there from 3:15pm.
We use Show My Homework (SMHK) to record and communicate homework. This makes it easy for staff, students and parents to work together to support learning outside of lessons.
Our school home learning calendar can be accessed by following this link.
We will be helping students and parents with their personal access to Show My Homework in set roll out weeks in mid September. These will coincide with the parent information evenings for each year group at the start of the year.
If you have any problems accessing Show My Homework e mail or call 0207 197 9550 in the first instance.

Homework tasks are expected to achieve one of the following aims;
  • Embed – consolidate or practice any skills or knowledge learned in class
  • Extend – develop further a student’s understanding, skills or knowledge
  • Improve – make an existing piece of work better
  • Apply – Use existing knowledge of skills to attempt a new task
The amount of homework we expect students to be set is detailed on the table below.
