Getting Ready for George Abbot School: Thinking Skills Activities
George Abbot is committed to promoting the progress of every child and ensuring that students have access to learning that is tailored to their needs. Our team consists of specialist teachers, learning support assistants, external specialists who visit students on site. The team supports students with needs in the following areas:
- cognition and learning;
- communication and interaction;
- social, emotional and mental health;
- physical and sensory disability;
- English as an additional language.
We as a team have already been in contact with all feeder schools to gather information about students with SEND, who are starting here in September; so please be reassured that we will be ready to support your child as required.
We have a number of additional strategies that we use to help students with SEND in the transition to secondary school. These may be different to those they have experienced in primary school as the secondary setting is different and therefore, we are working within different parameters. However, we will work with primary school staff to ensure the best crossover possible. The most important step we take is to ensure that teaching staff are made aware of the needs of the students they teach so they can provide an inclusive learning environment for all students and can make adaptions for those who require them.
Students will complete a short online test when they start with us to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their learning. We focus Learning Support Assistant (LSA) support in year 7 classes in September, and all staff and older students are ready to provide additional support to students in class or moving about the school. Testing, primary school information and how students settle in during the first month will help us to identify those with the most needs, who may then be offered additional support. Students with EHCP’s in place already, or those who have significant need as identified by primary schools, will be provided with support from day one and I will be in touch with those families during June or July to arrange additional transition support.
As a school, we will write to all parents of students we place on our SEND Support List so that you as parents will be fully informed of the support strategies we are putting in place. Please do have a look at our Learning Support page for more information about our team and the support we offer.
At George Abbot School, our Year 7 Pupil Premium cohort make up our first year of scholars. Our scholars are supported throughout their time at secondary school and this support is tailored to individual pupils and their families. We are able to use our pupil premium funding to help in all sorts of ways, to level the playing field and to provide equal opportunities for all. We help to foster a love for learning in all of our pupils and encourage them all to strive for success in their own futures; we encourage pupils to be ambitious and to create and follow their aspirations.
